How to Brew Espresso

Here are the main ways you can make espresso (or espresso-style drinks) at home, from most authentic to easiest:

True Espresso

  1. Espresso Machine (Pump-Driven)

    • Uses ~9 bars of pressure.

    • Produces real espresso with rich crema.

    • Types: semi-automatic, automatic, super-automatic.

    • Best choice if you want café-quality shots at home.

  2. Manual Lever Machine

    • Old-school method where you pull the lever to create pressure.

    • More skill required, but can make excellent shots.

Espresso-Style Alternatives

(Strong, concentrated coffee—close to espresso but not exactly the same)

  1. Moka Pot (Stovetop Espresso Maker)

    • Affordable, easy to use.

    • Produces strong coffee but less pressure than real espresso.

  2. AeroPress (Espresso Hack)

    • Can make a concentrated, espresso-like shot.

    • Works best with very fine grounds and high manual pressure.

  3. Handheld Espresso Makers (e.g., Wacaco Nanopresso, Flair, Staresso)

    • Portable gadgets that use manual pumping or pressing to get near-espresso pressure.

    • Many can produce crema.

Convenient Options

  1. Capsule Machines (e.g., Nespresso)

    • Super easy, no mess.

    • Not quite true espresso, but good crema and consistent taste.

  2. Super-Automatic Machines

    • Grind, tamp, and brew with the push of a button.

    • Pricey but very convenient.

Types of Milk to Use

Not sure about oat milk?  No problem!  Give some of these non-dairy options a try:

Plant-Based Milks

  1. Almond Milk

    • Light, slightly nutty flavor.

    • Lower in calories, but not as creamy.

    • Popular in lattes and baking.

  2. Soy Milk

    • Creamy, neutral, and protein-rich.

    • Steams well, making it a good coffee creamer.

    • Often fortified with calcium & vitamins.

  3. Coconut Milk

    • Rich, tropical flavor.

    • Great for curries, desserts, smoothies.

    • Barista blends work well in coffee.

  4. Rice Milk

    • Naturally sweet, thin texture.

    • Hypoallergenic, good for people with nut/soy allergies.

    • Not very creamy for coffee.

  5. Cashew Milk

    • Richer and creamier than almond milk.

    • Mild flavor, blends well in sauces or coffee.

  6. Macadamia Milk

    • Smooth, buttery flavor.

    • Creamy enough for lattes.

  7. Hemp Milk

    • Nutty, earthy taste.

    • Contains omega-3s.

    • Thicker texture than rice or almond.

  8. Pea Milk (Ripple, etc.)

    • Neutral flavor, high in protein.

    • Creamy and good in coffee.
