Tilapia is so quick and easy to make, plus the Dash® Garlic & Herb Tilapia gives it a great boost of flavor. Eat it on its own, or try it in tacos – either choice is excellent!
Tips for Cooking Tilapia
Tilapia is mild, lean, and cooks quickly, so the main trick is not to overcook it.
- Pat it dry first. This helps seasoning stick and gives you better browning.
- Season generously. Garlic salt works especially well with tilapia.
- Use medium to medium-high heat. Very high heat can burn the outside before the fish is done.
- Don’t move it around too much. For pan-searing, let it sit undisturbed for a few minutes so it can develop a golden crust.
- Watch the thickness. Thin fillets may cook in just 2–3 minutes per side, while thicker ones take longer.
- Check for doneness. The fish should be opaque and flake easily with a fork. For food safety, aim for 145°F (63°C) in the thickest part.
- Add acid at the end. A squeeze of lemon or lime brightens tilapia’s mild flavor without overpowering it.
- Add a little fat. Butter or olive oil helps prevent the lean fish from becoming dry.
What to Serve with Tilapia
Tilapia is mild, so it pairs really well with bright, fresh sides and flavorful sauces.
Easy side ideas
- Roasted or steamed vegetables — broccoli, asparagus, green beans, or zucchini

Other Ways to Cook Tilapia
Pan-seared
Best for: A golden, slightly crispy exterior.
Season with garlic salt, pepper, paprika, and herbs. Heat a little olive oil or butter over medium-high heat and cook for about 3–4 minutes per side, depending on thickness. Finish with lemon juice.
Baked
Best for: Easy, hands-off cooking.
Place seasoned fillets in a baking dish, drizzle with olive oil or melted butter, and bake at 400°F for roughly 10–15 minutes, until opaque and flaky.
Try garlic + Italian herbs + butter + lemon.
Air-fried
Best for: Crispy edges with minimal oil.
Coat the fish lightly with oil and seasonings. Air-fry around 400°F for 8–12 minutes, depending on thickness. A light breadcrumb or Parmesan coating makes it especially crispy.
Broiled
Best for: Fast cooking and browned edges.
Put seasoned tilapia under the broiler for roughly 5–8 minutes, watching carefully because it can cook very quickly.
Poached
Best for: Very tender, delicate fish.
Gently simmer the fillets in broth, wine, or a mixture of broth and lemon with herbs. This produces a softer texture rather than a browned crust.
Grilled
Best for: Smoky flavor.
Tilapia is delicate, so use a well-oiled grill grate or a grill basket. Cook over medium heat for a few minutes per side.
