Homemade Bread: Easier Than You Think, Tastier Than You’d Believe

There’s something undeniably comforting about the aroma of freshly baked bread wafting through the house. It brings to mind that cozy feeling of safety and melted butter. Besides its amazing scent, homemade bread offers a plethora of other perks. From the satisfaction of creating something from scratch to cost savings, making your own bread is a rewarding adventure anyone can do. Today, we’ll explore the process of making your own delicious bread from start to finish and share some tips and tricks to ensure your bread-making ventures are a resounding success.

Perks of Becoming Your Own Baker:

We know in today’s busy world, it’s really convenient to pick up a loaf of bread from the store and be done with it. And there’s nothing wrong with that. However, sometimes things are worth going the extra mile for, and bread is one of those things.

Quality Ingredients

When you bake your own bread, you have complete control over the ingredients. This means you can opt for organic flour and high-quality grains, and avoid additives or preservatives commonly found in store-bought bread (if that’s something that’s important to you). You also know exactly what’s in your bread because you’re the one who put the ingredients in!


Homemade bread allows you to tailor the recipe to your preferences. Whether you prefer whole wheat, sourdough, or gluten-free, you can adjust the ingredients and flavors to suit your taste or dietary needs.


In today’s high-inflation world, this is probably one of our favorite perks. Making your own bread is a great way to cut costs and save a little money. The ingredients for bread are so simple (Flour, water, salt, yeast) and cheap that you can make triple the amount of bread you would get in one store-bought loaf. Plus, you get the added benefit of having freshly baked bread.

Health Benefits

Homemade bread can be healthier than its store-bought counterparts, as you can avoid excessive salt, sugar, and unwanted fats. Plus, the act of kneading and shaping the dough can be a therapeutic form of stress relief.

But How Do We Do It?

We’re so glad you asked. While a little time-consuming, bread is very simply to make. Plus, other than the 10-15 kneading process in the middle, most of the time is spent letting the dough rest and rise, leaving you free to do other things while you wait. We’ll show you the basic process for making bread, so you can see it’s really not as complicated as some people think.

  1. Gather Your Ingredients: The basic ingredients for bread include flour, water, yeast, salt, and sometimes sugar or fat. You can also add extras like seeds, nuts, or dried fruit for additional flavor and texture. (Don’t forget to preheat your oven at this stage!)
  2. Activate the Yeast: If you’re using active dry yeast, it needs to be “activated” (think of it like waking the yeast up) before you use it. Dissolve it in warm water with a pinch of sugar and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy (directions for this are almost always on the yeast package).
  3. Mix the Dough: Combine the flour, salt, and any other dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Make a well in the center and pour in the activated yeast mixture, along with any other wet ingredients. Gradually incorporate the dry ingredients into the wet until a shaggy dough (combined but not smooth) forms.
  4. Knead the Dough: Put the dough onto a floured surface and knead it for about 10-15 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic (if you poke it gently, the dough reshapes instead of having a dent). This process develops the gluten in the flour, giving the bread its structure and texture.
  5. First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm, draft-free place until it doubles in size, usually about 1-2 hours.  (We like to put ours in the microwave – turned off, of course!)
  6. Punch Down and Shape: Once the dough has risen, gently punch (or simply push) it down to release any air bubbles. If your recipe is making more than one loaf, divide it into equal portions and shape each portion into loaves.
  7. Second Rise: Place the shaped dough on a baking sheet or in a loaf pan, cover it again, and let it rise for a second time until it doubles in size, usually about 30-60 minutes.
  8. Bake: Bake the bread until it’s golden brown. This can range anywhere from 30-60 minutes so make sure you’ve read through your recipe to see the time they recommend.

Tips and Tricks for More Success:

Use Fresh Ingredients: Fresh flour and yeast will yield the best results, so check the expiration dates before starting, particularly the yeast. Yeast is a “living” organism. If it gets too old and dies, it won’t form the gas bubbles that cause your bread to rise.

Measure Accurately: Baking is a science, so it’s crucial to measure your ingredients accurately using measuring cups and measuring spoons. We talked about the importance of measuring accurately when baking right here if you need a refresher.

Don’t Rush the Rising Process: Allowing the dough enough time to rise properly is essential for achieving the desired texture and flavor, so be patient!

Experiment with Flavors: Once you’ve mastered the basic bread recipe, don’t be afraid to get creative with flavors by adding herbs, spices, or other mix-ins to customize your loaves. Can you imagine a great rosemary, oregano, and garlic loaf next to a big bowl of Tomato Basil Soup? Yum!

Invest in Quality Equipment: While you don’t need fancy equipment to make bread, investing in a good quality stand mixer or bread machine can make the process easier and more consistent.

Practice Makes Perfect: Like any skill, bread-making takes practice. Don’t be discouraged if your first few loaves aren’t perfect; keep experimenting and refining your technique. We promise you’ll get it!
