What is Spaghetti Squash?

Spaghetti squash is a type of winter squash known for its unique flesh — when cooked, it naturally separates into long, thin strands that look a lot like spaghetti noodles.

  • Appearance: It’s oval-shaped with a hard rind that’s usually pale yellow when ripe.

  • Flavor: Mild and slightly sweet, making it a great base for savory sauces or toppings.

  • Texture after cooking: The inside turns into tender, stringy strands you can pull apart with a fork.

  • Cooking methods: Commonly roasted, microwaved, or boiled before scraping out the strands.

  • Uses: A popular low-carb or gluten-free alternative to pasta, often topped with marinara, pesto, or even tossed in stir-fries.

Other Tasty Things to Try Adding

Spaghetti squash has a mild, slightly sweet flavor, so it pairs well with proteins that bring savory richness or a bit of spice to balance it out. Some tasty options include:

1. Poultry

  • Grilled or roasted chicken — seasoned with garlic, herbs, or Italian spices.

  • Turkey meatballs — classic marinara pairing works beautifully.

2. Seafood

  • Shrimp or scallops — sautéed in garlic butter or lemon.

  • Salmon — baked or pan-seared, especially with a dill or pesto sauce.

3. Beef & Pork

  • Lean ground beef — for a bolognese-style topping.

  • Italian sausage — adds a flavorful, slightly spicy kick.

4. Plant-Based Options

  • Lentils — simmered in tomato sauce for a hearty vegetarian option.

  • Tofu or tempeh — marinated and pan-seared for a savory bite.
