Scalloped potatoes are a classic dish made with thinly sliced potatoes layered in a creamy sauce and baked until tender and golden brown. They make an excellent side or even brunch dish! What makes this recipe different is that it uses Dash™ Seasoning to add flavor WITHOUT the salt typically found in scalloped potato dishes. Try either Dash™ Original Seasoning or Dash™ Garlic & Herb – both add maximum flavor, no salt needed.
Scalloped Potato Success Stories
Prep Tips
-
Use the right potato: Yukon Golds or Russets are best. Yukons are creamier, Russets are starchier and make a thicker sauce.
-
Slice thin and even: About 1/8″ thick slices are perfect. A mandoline slicer makes this super easy and uniform.
-
Soak the slices (optional): If you’re using starchy potatoes like Russets, a quick rinse or soak removes excess starch and helps prevent gumminess.
Flavor Boosters
-
Infuse your cream/milk: Warm it first with garlic, onion, thyme, or bay leaf to build a flavor base before pouring it over the potatoes.
-
Add cheese wisely: If you’re doing a cheesy version (technically that’s “au gratin”), layer sharp cheeses like Gruyère, cheddar, or Parmesan. Avoid pre-shredded cheese — it doesn’t melt as well.
-
Sauté aromatics: Onions, leeks, or shallots cooked in butter before adding them to the layers add great depth.
Assembly & Baking
-
Grease your dish: Butter or oil helps prevent sticking and adds flavor.
-
Layer with seasoning: Don’t forget to salt and pepper each layer of potatoes as you go. Bland potatoes = sad potatoes.
-
Cover, then uncover: Bake covered with foil for the first 45–60 minutes so the potatoes steam and cook through. Then uncover for the last 20–30 minutes to brown the top.
Finishing Touches
-
Rest before serving: Let it sit for 10–15 minutes after baking. It helps everything set and makes for cleaner slices.
-
Top with herbs: Chopped parsley, thyme, or even chives for a pop of color and freshness.
