Tips for Making Homemade Fries

Making perfect homemade fries requires a few key steps to get that crispy exterior and fluffy interior. Here are some essential tips:

1. Choose the Right Potatoes

  • Use Russet potatoes for the crispiest texture (high starch, low moisture).

  • Yukon Gold potatoes can be used for a slightly creamier texture.

2. Cut Evenly

  • Slice the potatoes into uniform sticks (¼-inch to ½-inch thick) to ensure even cooking.

  • A mandoline slicer or sharp knife can help keep cuts consistent.

3. Soak in Cold Water

  • Soak the cut fries in cold water for at least 30 minutes (or up to a few hours).

  • This helps remove excess starch, making them crispier when fried.

4. Dry Completely

  • Drain and pat them dry with a kitchen towel to prevent splattering when frying.

5. Use the Right Oil

  • Peanut oil, canola oil, or vegetable oil works best for frying due to their high smoke points.

6. Double Fry for Extra Crispiness

  • First Fry: Cook at 325°F (163°C) for 3-4 minutes until soft but not browned.

  • Second Fry: Increase oil temperature to 375°F (190°C) and fry until golden brown and crispy (2-3 minutes).

7. Season Immediately

  • Sprinkle with salt and any other seasonings right after frying while they’re still hot to help them stick.

8. Try Oven or Air Fryer Alternatives

  • Oven: Toss fries with a little oil, bake at 425°F (218°C) for about 30-40 minutes, flipping halfway.

  • Air Fryer: Cook at 380°F (193°C) for 15-20 minutes, shaking the basket occasionally.

9. Serve Fresh

  • Fries are best enjoyed immediately, as they can lose their crispiness over time.
