If you’re unfamiliar with the flavor of turmeric, it has a warm, earthy, and slightly bitter flavor with a hint of peppery spice. It’s not overly strong, but it can be quite distinct and aromatic, especially when used in larger quantities. Some people also detect a slight mustard-like or gingery undertone, which makes sense since turmeric is related to ginger.

How to Use Turmeric

In Cooking

  1. Spice Blends: Add it to curry powder, masalas, or spice rubs for meats and veggies.
  2. Rice & Grains: Stir it into rice, quinoa, or couscous while cooking for a golden color and subtle flavor.
  3. Soups & Stews: Sprinkle it into broths, soups, or stews for warmth and depth.
  4. Eggs & Veggies: Toss it with roasted veggies, scrambled eggs, or stir-fries.
  5. Golden Milk (Turmeric Latte): Whisk a teaspoon of turmeric with milk (dairy or plant-based), a pinch of black pepper, and a bit of honey or maple syrup.
  6. Smoothies: Add a small pinch to smoothies for a health boost.

For Health

  1. Tea: Brew it with hot water, ginger, and honey for a soothing tea.
  2. Shots: Mix turmeric powder with lemon juice, ginger, and a pinch of cayenne pepper for an immunity shot.
  3. Supplements: Take turmeric capsules or curcumin supplements (check with a doctor first).

For Skincare

  1. Face Mask: Mix turmeric with yogurt or honey to create a mask for glowing skin (use small amounts, as it can stain!).
  2. Spot Treatment: Combine turmeric with aloe vera gel to soothe acne or redness.

Pro Tips

  • Black Pepper: Always pair turmeric with a pinch of black pepper to enhance curcumin absorption.
  • Use Sparingly: A little goes a long way; start with 1/2 teaspoon and adjust.
  • Watch for Staining: It can stain countertops, clothing, and skin, so handle carefully.
