Dash™ Steak and Veggie Kabobs

Kabobs, also spelled kebabs, are a dish consisting of small pieces of meat, seafood, poultry, or vegetables threaded onto skewers and grilled or roasted. The term “kabob” originated from the Middle East and South Asia, where skewered meats have been a popular food for centuries.

The preparation of kabobs typically involves marinating the ingredients in various spices, herbs, and sauces to enhance flavor before threading them onto skewers. This allows the flavors to infuse into the ingredients, resulting in a tasty and aromatic dish.  For this recipe, we’ll be using Dash™ Original Seasoning, which provides the flavor of onion, black pepper, parsley, celery seed, basil, bay, marjoram, oregano, savory, thyme, cayenne pepper, coriander, cumin, mustard, rosemary, garlic, carrot, orange peel, tomato, lemon, and more…but absolutely NO salt!

We know you’re probably itching to start grilling your kabobs, but there’s a little preparation involved!

Preparation for Wooden Skewers:

  1. Soaking: If you’re using wooden skewers, it’s essential to soak them in water before using them. This helps prevent them from burning during cooking. Place the skewers in a shallow dish or pan filled with water and let them soak for at least 30 minutes to 1 hour. Some people prefer to soak them for longer, even overnight.
  2. Assembly: After soaking, remove the skewers from the water and shake off any excess. Now, you can thread the ingredients onto the skewers to assemble your kabobs.

Preparation for Metal Skewers:

  1. Preparation: Metal skewers don’t require soaking like wooden skewers. However, it’s a good idea to handle them with care as they can become hot during cooking.
  2. Assembly: Thread the ingredients onto the metal skewers to assemble your kabobs. Metal skewers can be reused multiple times and are generally more durable than wooden skewers.

Tips for Assembling Kabobs:

  • Evenly Sized Pieces: Cut your ingredients into evenly sized pieces to ensure they cook at the same rate.
  • Alternate Ingredients: Thread different ingredients onto the skewers, alternating between meats, vegetables, and other items for a visually appealing presentation and even cooking.
  • Leave Space: Leave a small space between each piece on the skewer to ensure even cooking and allow for air circulation.
  • Securely Thread: Push the ingredients firmly onto the skewer to prevent them from sliding around during cooking.
