Tips for Cooking Bacon
Want to enjoy that salty, crispy, wonderful bacon – but not sure which cooking method is best for you? Check out some of these options:
Here are several good ways to cook bacon, depending on how crispy or hands-off you want it:
- Skillet/frying pan: Start bacon in a cold pan over medium heat. Cook 4–8 minutes, flipping occasionally, until it reaches your preferred crispness. Great for classic bacon and easy to control.
- Oven: Lay bacon in a single layer on a foil- or parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake at 400°F (205°C) for about 15–20 minutes. Very even cooking and excellent for making a lot at once.
- Air fryer: Cook at 350°F (175°C) for about 7–10 minutes, checking toward the end. Produces very crispy bacon with minimal mess.
- Microwave: Put bacon between paper towels on a microwave-safe plate. Microwave for 3–6 minutes, depending on the amount and your microwave. Fastest option.
- Grill: Cook over medium heat, preferably using a grill pan or a piece of foil with edges to prevent grease from dripping into the flames. Gives bacon a slightly smoky flavor.
- Cast-iron pan: Similar to skillet cooking, but the heavy pan distributes heat very well. Excellent for thick-cut bacon.
- Water method: Add bacon to a skillet with a small amount of water, then cook over medium-high heat until the water evaporates and the bacon continues frying in its rendered fat. This can produce evenly cooked, crisp bacon.
For different textures
- Chewy: Lower heat and shorter cooking time.
- Classic crisp: Medium heat until browned and crisp around the edges.
- Extra crispy: Oven or air fryer, cooked a little longer.
- Thick-cut: Oven or cast iron works particularly well.
