What is Burrata?
Burrata is a fresh Italian cheese made from cow’s milk. It has a soft outer shell of mozzarella and a creamy, rich interior filled with stracciatella (shreds of mozzarella soaked in cream). The name burrata comes from the Italian word burro, meaning “butter,” which reflects its buttery texture.
It originated in the Puglia region of Italy and is best enjoyed fresh. Burrata is often served with tomatoes, basil, olive oil, prosciutto, or crusty bread. Its delicate, milky flavor makes it a favorite in salads, pasta, and gourmet appetizers.
How to Elevate Caprese Salad
Caprese salad can be a very satisfying meal – especially when you throw in a few add-ons!
Protein Boosts
- Prosciutto – Adds a salty, savory contrast.
- Grilled Chicken – Makes it more of a meal.
- Shrimp – Light and fresh, great with lemon zest.
Extra Flavor Enhancers
- Avocado – Creamy texture complements the mozzarella.
- Balsamic Glaze – A tangy-sweet drizzle for extra depth.
- Pesto – Instead of basil leaves, use basil pesto for more flavor.
- Honey or Hot Honey – Adds a touch of sweetness.
Crunch & Texture
- Toasted Pine Nuts – A nutty crunch pairs beautifully.
- Croutons or Crostini – Turns it into more of a bruschetta-style dish.
- Pepitas (Pumpkin Seeds) – A crunchy, slightly nutty addition.
Fruit Twists
- Peaches or Nectarines – Adds juicy sweetness.
- Strawberries – A fun, fresh contrast to the tomatoes.
- Figs – Brings a rich, natural sweetness.
